Electric Motors For Railways1

Electric motors for railways are designed for auxiliary applications in railway transportation, diesel locomotives, and electric rolling stock. They are primarily used to drive compressors, ventilation fans, hydraulic pumps, fuel pumps, and other auxiliary machinery, as well as serve as auxiliary generators and tachogenerators.

The motors shall operate according to their nameplate data under the following conditions

 

 

 

 

 

 

a) Altitude not exceeding 500 mm ;

b) Maximum ambient temperature: 40°C (in shaded areas) / 45°C (inside the vehicle body); minimum ambient temperature: -40°C ;

c) Relative humidity: Monthly average maximum humidity of the most humid month is 90% (with a monthly average minimum temperature of 25°C in that month);

 

d) Exposure to rain, snow, wind, and sand during locomotive operation;

e) Subject to normal operational shocks and vibrations of locomotives.

f) If the motor needs to operate under conditions exceeding those specified above, it can be negotiated with the manufacturer.

 

 

Structural type

 

 

The basic installation type of the motor
1. Horizontal, frame with feet (IMB3)
2. According to the needs of users, it can also be made into other installation types, single-shaft extension or double-shaft extension motors, and single-shaft extension motors can be equipped with tachogenerators or other speed measuring devices at the non-transmission end.
3. The position of the motor outlet box of IMB3 and IMB35 installation type is from the transmission end, on the left side of the frame (for the positive box), and if the user needs, it can also be on the right side of the frame (for the reverse box), or above the frame. IMBl0 and IMVl0 mounted motors do not have an outlet box.
4. The basic direction of rotation of the motor is regarded as counterclockwise rotation from the transmission end.

Periodic Maintenance (Scheduled Intervals)

 
Interval Procedure Technical Guidelines
Weekly Clean exterior dust/oil; verify secure grounding. Avoid high-pressure water; dry thoroughly after wiping.
Monthly Measure insulation resistance (≥2 MΩ with 500V megohmmeter); tighten oxidized terminals. Power off and discharge before testing; extend drying time in high humidity.
Quarterly Inspect bearings for wear and grease condition; replenish or replace grease (fill ≤1/3–1/2 of bearing cavity). Use specialized tools; avoid hammering bearings.
Biannually Calibrate tachogenerator (e.g., ZTP-21) signal accuracy; check refrigeration motor (e.g., ZTP-22) load compatibility. Use oscilloscopes/calibrators per technical manuals.
Annually Full disassembly to inspect winding insulation, commutator wear, and bearing clearance; overhaul or replace critical parts if needed. Return to factory for precision reassembly and balancing.
